It seems that 10% of American teens are are walking around with Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease(NAFLD)!!

“Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was examined by Marilyn Vos of Emory University. NHANES recorded data on 10,359 teenagers aged 12-18 from 1988-2008. Vos and co-researchers found that 9.9% have NAFLD”.

Now we know that kids from 12-18 are not binge drinking, so what could possibly be causing this problem? Experts are pointing to the ever increasing mass consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is known to be associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. For years, not only us at Virginia Hill Chiropractic, but chiropractors around the world have voiced our opinions on artificial sweeteners and the harm they cause.

The argument has been made that your brain and body can’t tell the difference between sugar and HFCS. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “Sugar is sugar”. This can’t be further that the truth. The facts and studies are out there for people to read indicating the multiple health problems arising in this country since the introduction of, not only HFCS, but other artificial sweeteners as well, such as Aspartame. This information does not paint a pretty picture for the health of the next generation of adults in this country. Fatty liver disease leads to other diseases such as hepatitis, diabetes, cirrhosis, and cancer. It also means that overall health of the entire body is harmed, so that the victim’s enjoyment of life is dampened.

As a chiropractor in Atlanta, I focus mainly on detecting and correcting Subluxation in the spine. I do however offer advise in nutrition based on the studies I read from reliable sources. These days the evidence is overwhelming and readily available. Even the food manufacturers are feeling the pressure. We are now seeing more and more products putting sugar back on their labels.

The bottom line is, yes sugar is bad for your kids, but this other stuff will slowly kill them!
